Hi everybody,
I was expecting to see a good one and I wasn't disappointed, this really is a good one, say what you want about Ben Afflect acting, but he really is a good director, and his acting in this one is probably his best yet.
The movie starts with a history lesson about Iran, and is not bias in terms of the role the U.S. had the power struggle in that middle eastern country, after that we see the american embassy being overrun and all the men and women that work there being captured, except for six of them that manage to escape, they run to the Canadian ambassador private house and hide from the Iranians that want to capture them.
A few weeks pass and we met the protagonist, he is a extraction expert ( taking people out from problematic countries/places) that has a problematic relationship with his family probably because of his work and even thought in this case he is only a consultant he takes the responsibility of being the one that extracts them. He concocts a elaborate plan to recruit two Hollywood guys to pretend to make a movie and visit Iran in a location scout trip, and extract them pretending they are in his group as director, writer, etc...
This one really worked, on several levels, even thought it's based in a true story the characters have some real depth, almost all of them have several conflicts, and that is what makes a good character, what the writer and the director do very good in all the movie is make clear the goals and the obstacles, and that makes you really understand what is at stake and what will happen if they fail, and if the writer/director manage to do that you will care for them and even if the story is not that great (fortunately in Argo that is not the case).
Another think that surprised me was how fast the movie ran, it has a full 2 hours but to me it passed really fast and that is something really good, it means that it's not dragging around.
The movie is really good. I'm not going to give it the BRILLIANT, not because it has anything that was bad but because I want to save that to the ones that I think will make their mark in movie history, and i don't think this one will be one of those, but i'll tell you this after this one, Gone baby gone and The Town, I will for sure be waiting for Ben's next movie.
Just awful - O
Not for me - O
1 time only - O
Good - X+
Brilliant - O
Bryan Cranston is one of the most hard working actors in the past 2 years, I feel like he is is every movie I see, I'm not complaining he is like Paul Giamatti and many other that take a movie to a different level.
It will be a sad day when Breaking Bad ends, but if they don't fack it up it will be a tv show for the ages like The Wire and only a few others.
