What a great movie, I was going to wait for tomorrow to write his but from the way home all I though was, I have to write this tonight. This one I got the chance to go see for free, but let me tell you I would gladly have payed for it. It's one of those movies that are like an onion, (I know it's a quote from Shrek) not because they stink but because it has so many layers.

The Life of Pi starts of with a kid and his beliefs in terms of religion, I'm not going to go to the detail of saying what he does, but that part of the story really mean something to me, I'm not a religious person, and in a way I think in modern society religion does more harm than good, I believe that in it's core religion is filled with good intention that gets turned upside down by rigid following of those words that are nothing more that stories from almost 2 thousand years ago. What I like about this movie is how the main character sees religion, he takes the parts that he likes and has no animosity against other religion. I'm going of topic, so back to the movie.

So, this guy and his family own a Zoo, his father and mother decide it's better if they sell the animals and go live in another country, other then India. They put their animal in the boat, and sail away, (sail isn't the right term but you get it). The boat is caught in a storm and sinks. The boy now has to survive...

The movie starts by a writer asking the boy, now a man, about his story, so we learn it being narrated by the boy himself, and that is what makes his a great one. The narrator gives the movie a magical meaning, something that would be impossible to show other way, I'm not fan of narrators, but when it is done correctly it's a wonderful thing.

I'm not going to explore the story more, so you will get the opportunity to discover this world for yourself.

Ang Lee in indeed a great director, this adaptation from a book what first in the hands of M. Night Shyamalan, couldn't have been done better. This end of year was great, we had Cloud Atlas and know this. I know that Lincoln will probably get the oscars but this two really deserve it and we still have Django, but we will see what happens.
